Business advice and inspection

Business advice

We carry out a wide range of duties that are aimed at protecting consumers and helping responsible businesses to profit. We regularly inspect shops and businesses within Caerphilly County Borough, everything from estate agents and garages to Internet companies and theatres, to ensure that their trading practices, advertising and pricing comply with the law.

If they are not abiding by the law we can take legal action.

To help ensure that the public can be confident about the goods and services they buy in the county borough, we also advise local businesses on complying with consumer law.

Public Protection Enforcement Policy

Our aim is to be transparent in what we do and our Public Protection Enforcement Policy sets out our approach. It emphasises our intention to advise and assist business in the first instance and focus on prevention as the way forward. This policy sets out the way we try to comply with the principles for good enforcement given in the Government's Enforcement Concordat.

Home Authority Principle

Whilst the service advises all traders operating within the county borough the advice will vary depending upon whether or not the business also has operations outside the borough.

In order that businesses operating across a number of local authority areas receive non-conflicting advice the Local Authority Co-ordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS) formulated the Home Authority Principle. In brief this differentiates between the responsibilities of authorities who have the head office and those who only have a production facility.
