Before starting a new food business within the county borough, you must first register your premises with us. This must be done at least 28 days before you start running the business.
Registration is free and you must complete an application form which is available to download below:

This form must also be completed if there is a change in circumstances.
Alternatively, you can register your food business online.
When starting a new food business, you need to consider the type of food produced or handled on your premises and the equipment, space and layout needed prior to starting any works to the building. You should contact us for further advice if you are planning to construct a new food premises or carry out renovation. This will avoid the possibility of having to redo works after a subsequent routine inspection.
If you are starting a food business which is not currently used for that purpose you will require Planning Permission and Building Regulation Approval. This may also be needed if you are carrying out renovation or extending an existing food premises. Please contact us on Tel: 01495 226622 for further advice.
As part of the Food Standards Agency's Food Hygiene Campaign, a booklet entitled Starting Up: Your first steps to running a catering business has been produced. This has been developed in co-operation with the Small Business Service and HM Customs and Revenue. It aims to give an outline of all the main things someone starting up a food business needs to know about.
