Road safety

The road safety service aims to reduce and prevent road casualities by equipping all road users with the skills, information and attitudes required to be safe on the roads. Education, training, publicity, engineering and enforcement all have a role to play in casualty reduction.

	Child safety – car seats In September 2006, the regulations relating to the use of child car seats were updated. They now stipulate that all children must use the appropriate child safety restraint when travelling in a vehicle.
	Children's Traffic Club The Children's Traffic Club has been set up to help parents and carers teach their 3 to 4 year old children basic road safety skills. Free of charge, this scheme consists of a series of six colourful and fun-packed activities for parents and their children to read together.
	Kerbcraft Kerbcraft is an innovative road safety scheme that aims to reduce the number of children injured on the road.
	Megadrive Mega Drive is delivered to college age students who will be planning on sitting their practical driving test in the not too distant future and may not be aware of all the potential hazards that come with driving on British roads.

	School crossing patrols In Caerphilly county borough we have 85 schools crossing patrols, helping children cross the road safely while walking to and from school.
	School gate parking Indiscriminate and dangerous stopping or parking near schools is putting the lives of parents and children at risk.
	School Travel Plans A School Travel Plan is a written document, which outlines a series of practical steps for improving children's safety on the journey to and from school.
	Speed management The purpose of speed management is to manage vehicle speeds at levels that reflect the needs of all road users and which are in harmony with the needs of communities and the environment. This will result in a safer, more pleasant road environment for all. Slower speeds will result in less severe injuries when accidents do occur.
	Walking bus The walking bus is a way for children to walk to school with their friends, providing fresh air and exercise, reducing the number of cars on the road during the school run, and giving more time to parents.
