House in multiple occupation (HMO) licence

If you rent out a property as a house in multiple occupation (HMO), you may require a licence from your local authority.

Fees

The fee for this license is £250.00 per property payable on submission of the application.

Application evaluation process

Licences will be granted if:

  • the house is or can be made suitable for multiple occupation
  • the applicant is a fit and proper person and the most appropriate person to hold the licence
  • the proposed manager has control of the house, and is a fit and proper person to be the manager
  • the management arrangements are satisfactory

What happens if your application is not processed within the timescales stated?

If you have not heard from this authority within 42 days you can act as though your application has been granted. The start period runs from receipt of all documentation and payment of relevant fee.
