Council tax

Council tax is one way in which council's raise money to pay for the services it provides. It is not a direct payment for services and is therefore payable whether or not those services are actually used by a citizen.

It is a property tax with a personal element - that is, it takes into account the value of a property and the number of eligible people aged 18 or over who live there.
