Adoption support

Parent and child holding hands

Adoption is a life long process and does not begin or end with the making of an Adoption Order. Most adoptions are successful, but some adoptive parents, adopted people and birth parents can have worries or difficulties and may need additional support.

If you have been adopted

If you are adopted and are aged 18 or over, please contact us if you would like:

  • To speak to someone about issues to do with your adoption.
  • More information about your early life or birth family history.
  • Some advice about how you could contact a member of your birth family.

If you are adopted and are aged 18 or under, you may already know about your early life and your birth family history. However much you know, you may have more questions than your adopters can answer. If you feel that this is the case or that you are unable to discuss things with your adoptive parents, please contact us.

If you have adopted a child (or are member of an adoptive family)

There may be times throughout your child's life when you would find it helpful to talk to someone outside the family about issues relating to adoption. You may, for example, want some ideas about how to discuss adoption with your child, or how to react to and cope with your child's feelings about his or her adoption.

We offer many different services to adoptive families, so please contact us.

If your child has been adopted

Once adopted people reach the age of 18, they can trace their birth relatives if they so wish. The law also makes provision for birth relatives to seek information that could lead to the tracing of an adopted adult. We can help you by making enquiries, searching and possibly making contact. However, whether information is shared or contact is made is dependent on the adopted adult and their wishes and feelings.

You may have already met with your adopted child, or anticipate doing so and would like to talk to someone about your feelings.

We offer a range of services to birth families of adopted children, so please contact us to discuss.

Please note: to access some of the support services, an assessment of need has to be undertaken
