Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr

Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr

The new Local General Hospital, Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, has replaced the existing Caerphilly Miners Hospital and smaller community hospitals in the county borough, with the most up to date health facilities.

The new hospital enables more people to be treated locally. It has been designed to include approximately 270 beds with single bedrooms incorporating en-suite rooms, which will improve both patient privacy and also infection control. There will be increased local access to services for inpatients, outpatients and emergencies and it also provides services that are not currently available in the county borough such as 24 hour local emergency centre, CT scanning, a dedicated stroke unit and a hydrotherapy pool.

Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr offers the following range of services: -

  • Emergency assessment and treatment
  • Birth centre with midwifery-led deliveries
  • Routine elective surgery including day case and inpatient care
  • More extensive diagnostics, including endoscopies
  • Adult and older adult mental health services

BAM Construction was selected by Aneurin Bevan Health Board as Supply Chain Partner for the design and construction of this project. Construction of the new hospital commenced in September 2008 and the hospital was opened in November 2011. BAM Construction worked closely with the Environment Agency to implement an Environmental Plan for the protection of fauna and flora in the area – including the fish stock in the nearby River Rhymney. A flood protection plan has also been implemented.

The hospital has been designed with its valley location in mind and the entire structure is elevated with under croft parking. The scheme has been carefully designed to give a feeling of "outdoor/indoors", with landscaping features piercing through the structure to create intimate courtyard gardens.

The building has been constructed to meet the environmental targets set by the Welsh Government.
