A major development for Newbridge came in 2008, with the re-opening of the Ebbw Valley railway line and a new train station in the town centre.
A year later, the strikingly designed "Calzaghe Bridge" was opened, which spans both the Ebbw Valley railway line and the River Ebbw. The Bridge was the first phase of the Newbridge Regeneration Programme and has helped connect key parts of the town together: Newbridge School and Leisure centre on the east bank of the river, town centre shops and services on the western bank, with the strategic transport links of the railway station and rail/bus interchange in between.
The Bridge has created sustainable access to Newbridge for pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities. The bridge was designed and project managed by Caerphilly County Borough Council's Joint Venture partner Capita Symonds.
Funding was secured through the European Union Convergence Programme, Welsh Government, Caerphilly County Borough Council and the Newbridge Community Partnership.
