Keeping your home

Padlocked house

If you are at risk of losing your home, there is help available. A full range of support is available through the council and other organisations.

If you are facing eviction, repossession or homelessness, don't ignore the situation. The first step should be to contact your mortgage lender or landlord directly.

Housing advice

If you are not able to resolve the situation with your landlord or mortgage lender, contact our Housing Advice Section for advice on 01443 873552.

If you are a council tenant, we can arrange FREE confidential debt counselling with an independent debt and money advisor for anyone in rent arrears or likely to get into arrears. Visit our debt counselling for council tenants webpage for further details.

We have a series of webpages that offer advice on homelessness, applying for council housing and applying for social rented housing by a housing association. We also publish weekly lists of council and private rentals available. Visit our housing advice webpages for details.

Mortgage Rescue Scheme

The Mortgage Rescue Scheme may be able to help you if you are an owner-occupier in mortgage difficulties and you are in danger of having your home repossessed. Visit the Mortgage Rescue Scheme webpage for further details about the scheme.

Housing benefits

If you're on a low income you may be entitled to housing benefit. Housing benefit is a payment made by the council to people finding it hard to pay their rent, either to a Housing Association or to a private landlord. For further information and to apply visit our Housing benefit and council tax reduction webpages.
