Alcohol Strategy

Alcohol is recognised as an integral part of the British culture and provides a substantial economic contribution. However, when consumed irresponsibly or illegally the consequences are far reaching, not only affecting the individual and the family but the community at large.

Management of the alcohol related industry and tackling the impact of excess consumption of alcohol in the county borough is the responsibility of several organisations and groups including Caerphilly County Borough Council, Gwent Police, Aneurin Bevan Health board and the Voluntary Sector.

The focus of regulating the alcohol supply chain, mitigating the community effects of alcohol misuse and educating on alcohol related health matters in the county borough falls to the Public Protection Division of Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Aims of the Alcohol Strategy

To ensure the work carried out by the Public Protection Division encourages a safe, thriving and legal alcohol related economy and reduces the harm associated with problem alcohol consumption throughout the county borough by: -

• Identifying alcohol related areas of responsibility within Public Protection
• Acknowledging current alcohol related work in Public Protection
• Raise awareness of the health benefits of sensible alcohol consumption
• Producing an action plan to raise awareness and work to reduce the harms associated with problem alcohol consumption

How are we tackling the problem?

It is widely acknowledged that alcohol is a contributory factor to crime, the fear of crime and ill health.

We have taken a multi-faceted approach to reduce the problem which includes educating young people, the traders who sell the alcohol and where necessary taking enforcement action to deal with the issues that arise.
