Adapting homes

If you or someone living in your property has permanent and substantial disabilities you may qualify for financial assistance towards the cost of providing adaptations and facilities to enable the disabled person to continue to live at home.

Difficulties may include problems such as;

  • Getting in and out of the bath
  • Climbing stairs
  • Moving around or accessing your home

Who may qualify?

Eligibility criteria for assessment are used so that social services can work out whom they can help. If it is not possible to offer you an assessment we may be able to refer you to other organisations or give you relevant information and advice.

If you meet the criteria for assessment a member of the occupational therapy team will visit you to decide with you the best way you can be assisted. This may include special techniques or equipment that may help such as grab rails, mechanical lifts and hoists and specialist bathing equipment, that are loaned free of charge for as long as required.

An occupational therapist may also consider supporting an application for financial assistance in providing adaptations, by way of:

They will then write to our Adaptations Team outlining the adaptations they feel to be necessary and appropriate. The Adaptations Team will then contact you to arrange and assist you with the application process.
