Located in the heart of Caerphilly county borough, Blackwood is an important shopping centre, which continues to attract top High Street names. Blackwood's busy shopping centre boasts a regular and lively outdoor market, which is easily accessible with good parking facilities.
The town has already benefited from the new northern retail development, which has attracted national retailers and further ambitious improvements to the infrastructure and public spaces have created investment opportunities and assisted in delivering a wider choice of shops - making it a real alternative to Cardiff and Newport.
Events and activities
Blackwood benefits from a series of free events throughout the year, many of which are organised by a highly active Town Council. Blackwood has a lively traditional outdoor market held three times a week on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday in the centrally located marketplace.
Summertime is festival time for Blackwood. The premier event at the beginning of August is the Blackwood Carnival. It is organised by Blackwood Town Council and the 2010 event will take place on the 7th August. Blackwood has previously hosted the Chartist Fair.
The Big Balloon Festival has been replaced by a Kite Night. This precedes the Bedwellty Agricultural Show and features giant kites and a laser spectacular - culminating in a firework display. The Bedwellty Agricultural Show has been running for over 100 years and still features livestock and horse exhibits. This year's event has been extended over 2 days on 21st and 22nd August and will also include tradestands and craft displays. This show traditionally takes place on the Blackwood Showground.
December concludes the year long events programme with the Christmas lights and lantern parade, which has previously attracted over 400 people.
In the middle of town is the council owned Blackwood Miners' Institute, which provides a theatre and cinema complex. It offers a lively entertainment programme as well as arts workshops.
