5x60

5x60 The 5x60 programme intends to make significant inroads into the Welsh Assembly's target of 90% of secondary pupils achieving 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week by 2020. Based on the success of the initial pilots, the Welsh Assembly Government plans to invest some £7.6 million over the next 3 years in the scheme, and aims for every secondary school in Wales to be involved in the programme by 2009.

5x60 is set to change the face of provision of sport in schools and transform playing fields and sports halls into hubs of bustling activity from daybreak to nightfall. Every secondary school will have a 5x60 Officer based at the school, whose role will be to consult with the pupils, listen to what activities they would like to do, and look at solutions to the barriers preventing them from taking part in sport and physical activity.

The 5x60 officers will timetable a programme of activities that suit the pupils' needs. These activities will take place before school, during lunchtimes, after school and at the weekend. These activities will mainly be targeting individuals who currently do not do participate or who are in danger of losing interest.

Currently in Caerphilly County Borough, the following schools are part of the 5x60 scheme and each have a 5x60 officer:

  • Bedwas High School
  • Heolddu Comprehensive School
  • Lewis School Pengam
  • Lewis Girls Comprehensive School
  • Oakdale Comprehensive School
  • Pontllanfraith Comprehensive School
  • Rhymney Comprehensive School
  • St Cenydd School
  • St Martins Comprehensive School
