Disability Sport

Disability Sport Wales is a joint initiative between Sports Wales, Federation Disability Sport Wales and local authorities, aimed at developing quality community based sporting and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities throughout Wales.

The scheme's national objective is to create and develop club-based activities at grass roots level and provide professional support to help existing clubs expand. Its other key objectives are to:

  • Create new clubs and to give professional advice and support to improve existing clubs.
  • Increase the number of disabled people who are members of sports clubs.
  • Co-ordinate local accessible training courses for coaches and volunteers.
  • Establish local competition structures, which can lead on to regional and national activity.

There is a excellent club structure now in place for people with a disability to take place on a regular basis. Clubs include Football, Boccia, Swimming and Multi-sports.

School Holiday Programme

A wide ranging school holiday programme has been established for young people in collaboration with the Arts Council, which allows young people to experience sport and physical activities alongside music, drama and crafts.  The activity programme also works alongside the WAG Free Swim Initiative with many Leisure Centres across the county borough hosting a session for people with a disability.

InSport

In order to help support clubs deliver good quality sessions Disability Sport Wales have introduced inSport. InSport is a four tiered (Ribbon, Bronze, Silver and Gold) identification and accreditation process which any sports club can go through to show they are committed to providing and delivering inclusive sport. If you are a mainstream club providing inclusive sport already or would like to please contact Paul Taylor (Disability InSport Wales Development Officer). Look out for the insport logo that highlights some of the most inclusive sports clubs across Wales.
