Sustainable School Waste Minimisation
There are three things we can do to limit the impact of rubbish on the environment – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The amount of waste we produce is growing every year, so it’s important that we all do our bit to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
Rubbish is visible and familiar to everyone and so is an ideal starting point to cover environmental issues. Waste minimisation doesn’t just cover waste disposal, it also includes the Earth’s natural resources and the processing and transportation of everyday materials, including the energy used and pollution caused.
We have suggested some simple steps to help pupils, parents, teachers and staff work together to reduce, reuse and recycle and raise awareness of important waste minimisation and litter issues.
Sustainable Waste Minimisation projects
School Recycling Schemes:
The CCBC Waste Minimisation and Recycling Team provide a school-recycling scheme for every school in the Caerphilly County Borough with free recycling containers for the collection of paper, plastic bottles and cans.
For more information on recycling in schools in the Caerphilly County Borough call Public Services on 01443 866533 or email publicservices@caerphilly.gov.uk
School Ink Recycling Scheme:
This is the latest recycling scheme launched by CCBC’s waste management team. The project in conjunction with Land Phil Recycling Ltd, a Caerphilly based company, aims to collect and recycle used and unwanted laser and ink jet cartridges from schools across the Caerphilly county borough.
Schools taking part in the scheme will be provided with a recycling container with free collections being made by Land Phil who will donate any funds derived from the scheme back to the participating schools.
Yellow Woods Challenge:
The Yellow Woods Challenge is a fun environmental campaign run by Yellow Pages, the Woodland Trust and local councils across the UK, encouraging schools to collect and recycle old Yellow Pages.
Schools compete against each other to see who can bring in the most directories to be recycled. The pupils learn about recycling and have lots of fun competing for cash prizes.
For more information on the Yellow Woods Challenge in the Caerphilly County Borough please contact
School Composting:
Composting is a fantastic way of recycling kitchen and garden waste and is very popular in schools, especially with the fruit waste from the fruit tuck shop.
A healthy compost bin is also a fantastic resource to study food chains, mini beasts, microorganisms and much much more.
Remember to achieve a successful compost heap you need a balance of fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, grass cuttings, plants and flowers along with shredded paper, shredded cardboard, paper towels and leaves.

Waste Free Lunch Toolkits
The Waste Free Lunch Toolkit (on CD ROM) includes lots of useful documents for teachers, such as information on how to carry out a waste-audit and a spreadsheet to record data and calculate results. There is also a section for parents with ideas and tips on how to pack a healthy, waste-free lunch.
The toolkit has been developed in partnership with Caerphilly’s Healthy Schools team to stress the importance of making lunches healthy as well as waste-free.
For more information on the waste-free lunch scheme, please contact Caerphilly’s Waste Minimisation Team on 01495 235428.

Top Tips for sustainable waste minimisation in school
- Monitor your school recycling to use as part of your eco school monitoring and evaluating evidence
- Undertake a waste review to measure and monitor the amount of waste the school produces in one day and then find ways to minimise the amount of rubbish thrown away
- Design posters to encourage everyone in school to reduce, reuse and recycle
Set up a recycling scheme and nominate recycling monitors to make sure everyone is ‘doing their bit’ - Produce a graph to show the whole school how much is recycled, reused or thrown away
- Hold a litter pick once a week
- Discuss decomposition and nutrient transfer of different waste materials
- Try to purchase recycled materials where possible
- Reuse materials where possible in art & craft lessons
