If you were born or married within the County Borough of Caerphilly or in some of the surrounding districts, including some areas of Cardiff, Pontypridd, Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Pontypool, Merthyr Tydfil we may have your birth or marriage record amongst the registers held at the Register Office, Penallta House, Tredomen Park, Ystrad Mynach. However, due to the many boundary changes over the years the records may be held in one of our neighbouring districts. If you were born or married elsewhere in England or Wales or in any other country we should also be able to assist with an address for you to apply for a certificate. We hold records of deaths of people who have died within the Caerphilly County Borough area since 1837. However, due to the many boundary changes over the years, some records may be held in one of our neighbouring districts or we may hold a record for a death that occurred in one of our neighbouring districts. At the Register Office, Penallta House we hold details of many of the births, deaths and marriages that have occurred in the area since 1837. However, as boundaries have changed considerably over these years we do not hold all the records of the births, deaths and marriages within the Caerphilly county borough but, conversely, we also hold some records that occurred outside the boundaries of what is now the county borough so please contact the Superintendent Registrar for advice.

Births and Deaths

To obtain a birth or death certificate an applicant should provide the Superintendent Registrar with enough information to fully identify the entry and the reason for requiring the certificate.

A Superintendent Registrar will usually carry out a 5 year search for an entry when given a name and place of an event, providing an idea of the date can be given.

Marriages

The Superintendent Registrar of the Caerphilly Registration District only holds marriage registers for those churches and chapels which fall within the Caerphilly district and had an Authorised Person appointed or was a church of the Established Church (Church in Wales) between the dates as shown in the following lists. Since April 1996, all records of marriages within the district will be deposited with the Superintendent Registrar once registers are completed. To obtain a marriage certificate for family history purposes, the names of the parties, the date of the marriage (or the quarter and year) and the place at which the marriage took place should be stated. However, a search may be carried out by the Superintendent registrar if a district rather than actual place is stated and providing resources allow.
