Covid-19 grants linked to business rate properties in Wales

Welsh Government is making funds available for non-repayable grants for small businesses; these will be distributed by the Council for qualifying businesses situated within the Caerphilly County Borough that are registered to pay business rates on their premises on or before the 20th March 2020.

Important: Ratepayers can apply for these grants directly; please do not employ a rating agent to apply on your behalf.

There are two levels of grant available, both of which are based on the rateable value of the property occupied.

  • Grant 1: A grant of £25,000 is available for retail, leisure or hospitality businesses occupying properties with a rateable value of between £12,001 and £51,000. This means businesses occupying properties such as shops, restaurants, caf├ęs, drinking establishments, cinemas, live music venues, hotels, guest and boarding premises and self-catering accommodation.

  • Grant 2: A grant of £10,000 is available to all businesses eligible for small business rate relief (SBRR) with a rateable value of £12,000 or less.

Please note that the multiple property restriction which applies to the SBRR Scheme also applies to this grant. Therefore, the same ratepayer may only receive the grant for a maximum of two properties in each local authority area.

Before we can award a grant, you will need to provide us with some information. If you are successful, the grant will be paid directly into the bank account for the business.

Once you’ve made your application, we ask you to be patient in not following-up by telephone as that will result in grants taking longer to process.  We will contact you if we need to clarify anything.  We very much appreciate the major challenges being faced by businesses, and our staff will be making every effort to get your grant paid to you as soon as possible.

Covid-19 – additional rate relief for business rate properties in Wales

Welsh Government has announced a package of support for businesses to help during the coronavirus outbreak. Welsh Government has issued details of an enhanced rate relief scheme under which retail, leisure and hospitality properties will benefit from the additional business rate relief to be provided.

Bills for the new financial year 2020/21 have already been issued. The Welsh Government’s High Street and Retail Rate Relief Scheme for 2020/21, including the proposed enhanced relief for retail, leisure and hospitality sectors will be administered by the Council’s Business Rate Team and revised bills will be issued as soon as possible. However, as a priority we will firstly be administering the Covid-19 grants linked to business rate properties (see above). In the meantime, if your premises is used for retail, leisure and hospitality purposes, you should not make any payments in respect of the financial year starting on 1st April 2020.

If you have any queries, please email the Business Rates Team at nndr@caerphilly.gov.uk.

Due to the current situation, we would ask all ratepayers to correspond via email because there may be a period when we are unable to answer telephone calls or receive written correspondence.

Important: When we are able to start administering this new rate relief scheme for the financial year 2020/21, ratepayers should apply for the above rate relief directly; you do not need to employ a rating agent to act on your behalf.
