Stay safe with taxis

Revellers have been warned against using illegal taxis this festive season. If you get into an unregistered vehicle, you may be putting yourself in serious danger, so safety tips have been shared.

There are a number of signs you should look for, before hopping into a car at the end of your night out. Caerphilly County Borough Council has joined with registered taxi firms to help spread the safety message.

The taxi should have a badge in its windscreen with the CCBC logo and a number that is unique to that vehicle. The same info should be clearly displayed on the rear of the vehicle. Finally, check that the driver has an official CCBC driver badge, with dates showing that it is valid.

Vehicles that are not registered with Caerphilly County Borough Council are operating illegally in the area as taxis. During the busy Christmas and New Year period, people are urged to book their taxi in advance.
Every taxi that is registered with the council will have gone through rigorous checks, to guarantee the safety and reliability of the vehicle. Its driver will also have passed a full criminal background assessment.

Tracey Gifford, who has been a licensed taxi driver for more than 20 years, said: “Instead of taking selfies with your friends, take a selfie with your taxi in the background, showing that you are using a licensed vehicle.”

Cllr Eluned Stenner, Cabinet member for Public Protection, added:  “At this time of year, the issue of how you get home safely at the end of your night could not be more important. Look for the signs which prove the vehicle is registered with Caerphilly County Borough Council before getting in.”
