Local Rate Relief Scheme Announced

Our Business Rate Team has recently issued amended bills to known qualifying ratepayers following the Council’s Cabinet approving a local rate relief scheme for the financial year 2021/22, funded by the Welsh Government.

The funding reduces the rates payable for 2021/22 for most businesses that are occupying a business property and have some rates to pay. This rate relief is restricted to a maximum of two qualifying properties per ratepayer.  Unoccupied properties, properties subject to a nil charge, properties used by precepting bodies (e.g. the Police and Community Councils) and Caerphilly CBC properties are not eligible.  To qualify, a business rate payer must be in occupation on or before 1st September 2021 and this rate relief will only apply while the property is occupied.  If you vacate the property before 1st April 2022, the rate relief will be adjusted pro rata to match the occupation liability period.

To ensure that this funding is fully utilised, up to £535 rate relief per qualifying property is being awarded; the exact amount received depends upon the amount of business rate that is left to pay before this relief is awarded.  Please note this rate relief is subject to subsidy control limits (formerly known as state aid).

If you are a business rate payer within the Council’s area and think you may qualify but have not received an amended bill, please contact the Business Rate Team by emailing nndr@caerphilly.gov.uk or calling us on 01443 863006 and we’ll check if you’re eligible.
