Caerphilly council unveils ‘cut free’ budget proposals

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet has agreed an ambitious draft budget that does not include any proposed new cuts to services for 2021/22.
Leader of Council, Cllr Philippa Marsden, welcomed the decision at today’s Cabinet meeting (Wednesday 13th January), “I am proud of the way this authority continues to manage its budget thanks to our ongoing sound financial management and prudent approach.
“We are working hard to ensure that the council remains financially resilient during these uncertain times and I would like to thank all those involved for making this possible.”
“I fully support these draft budget proposals and I’m sure residents across the county borough will welcome the news that there will be no new cuts. This means we can continue to protect our key services for the future.”
The draft budget will now be presented to a meeting of Full Council next month for final approval.
The draft budget proposals also include a proposed increase of 3.9% in Council Tax for 2021/22. This would equate to an increase for Band D properties of 89p per week.
“This is likely to be one of the lowest increases in Wales and, whilst none of us want to see an increase in council tax, it is important to understand that it plays an important part in balancing our budget,” added Cllr Marsden.
Despite the positive overall picture, the council is keen to highlight that the settlement from Welsh Government does not cover the implications of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic – both in terms of additional costs as well as lost income. This will continue to be funded through grants in the new financial year and the position will be kept under close review.
