The Basement Project celebrates 20 years of service

The Basement Project in Blackwood recently celebrated their 20 year anniversary of service to young people and the community. The Basement is the information project for Caerphilly Youth Service which provides support, advocacy and general information for young people aged 11-25.

Cllr Julian Simmonds, Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council attended the celebrations and presented the hard working team with a well-deserved plaque to commemorate their service.

He went on to say “It was a pleasure to attend the celebration and present the plaque to the staff and young people. It was a brilliant day that marked the success of the group and I look forward to admiring their progress over the next few years.”

The project offers a number of other services such as group work and information based sessions i.e. drug and alcohol, self-esteem, internet safety, CV writing and many more.

They also offer support of monthly LGBTQ group and now there are over 100 LGBTQ young people registered with the project.

This project is the central point for volunteering opportunities for people within the youth service. It also provides opportunities on the junior leader programme for young people.

Cllr Philippa Marsden, Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement said “Congratulations to all, for the outstanding work and contribution over the life of this project so far, it is always heart-warming to know that this team is paramount in supporting our young people. It is a wonderful achievement and I know that The Basement will continue to make an impact on young people and the community.”

Mrs Nikki Taylor, Project Manager commented “What a fantastic achievement for the youth service celebrating 20 years. It was a pleasure to see so many of our partner agencies that we have worked with over many years celebrating with us.”

Blackwood Basement can be accessed by just dropping in and is located below Blackwood Library. Opening hours are below:
