Families First step up to the challenge
Posted on : 01 Mar 2021
Families First Targeted Youth and Family Engagement (TYFE) project have completed a virtual indoor camp and step challenge over half term.
With the support of Caerphilly Adventure staff, Caerphilly Council’s TYFE project ran a virtual indoor camp and step challenge involving over 50 families across the borough who are supported by the project.
Run entirely through Zoom, families created camp sites within their living rooms, building dens out of blankets and resources they had at home. They took part in a cooking session and ended the night with a scavenger hunt and quiz. After sleeping in their dens overnight, the teams participated in a breakfast Zoom the following morning, before activating their pedometers for the step challenge.
The teams were given the whole day to complete as many steps as they could. Some families opted to go out on muddy walks around their homes, while others stayed at home setting each other exercise challenges and having fun.
The total number of steps completed by those who took part in the challenge was 443,757. This number of steps is approximately 222 miles – the same distance from Caerphilly to Leeds!
Cllr. Shayne Cook, Cabinet Member for Social Care, said: “What a wonderful idea from our TYFE and Adventures teams. The overnight camp and step challenge was a great way to encourage families to use their imagination and have some family fun together in their own homes. Well done to all involved, it sounds like you all had a very fun time!”
