The Winding House Museum in new Tredegar is the perfect destination for those wanting to explore the past this Local Community History Month.

The museums West Gallery tells the story of Caerphilly county borough, from the rise of the Silures, through the Roman invasion and unrest of the Civil War, to modern day tales of the Industrial Revolution, two world wars and the decline of industry. This interactive exhibition is perfect for all ages and features a fascinating collection of local artefacts.

The museums East Gallery is home to a changing programme of exhibitions and currently features ‘The Life of Elliot’, which marks 50 years since the closure of the former colliery.

Visitors can hear memories of local miners’ who explain what it was like to work and live in a traditional South Wales mining community. There’s also the chance to enter a recreated mine shaft, complete with sights and sounds of a working colliery.  The exhibition showcases a collection of mining artefacts, showing the day-to-day equipment used by miners, the specialist tools of the mines rescue service as well as depicting what life was like at home for a typical mining family.

The impressive Victorian Winding Engine is all that remains of Elliot Colliery, which closed in 1967, is now maintained and operated by a team of dedicated volunteers and forms the centrepiece of the museum. Visitors can see the engine in operation at midday on Saturday 30th June, 28th July and 25th August. Visitors are advised to call ahead to ensure planned runnings are taking place.

Visitors can also enjoy a locally sourced treat in the museum coffee shop which serves a range of high quality cakes alongside hot beverages and cold drinks.  The museum gift shop is the ideal place to pick up a souvenir of your visit or find the perfect gift amongst the selection of local crafts, crafted ales and local history publications.
