Caerphilly MS Hefin David praised the work of Caerphilly County Borough Council in supporting dementia-friendly training to volunteers during lockdown.

Dementia charities have said services will remain for people requiring support during this time, as they adapt to new digital ways of working. This means new online resources, which let people train in dementia support, during this time of social distancing.

The Alzheimer’s Society set up the Dementia Friends initiative, to help support those living with the condition in the community. In the past, Caerphilly County Borough Council held Dementia Friends events at libraries and other sites.

With face-to-face Dementia Friends sessions currently postponed, the Dementia Friends website is still offering people the opportunity to become a Dementia Friend through completing an online information session.

Hefin David MS, who also praised the Gwent Regional Partnership Team, said: “It's pleasing to see the beginnings of an online Dementia Friends campaign highlighting the importance of Dementia Friendly communities, the work that is going on and how to share ideas, information and messages.

"Support for those many residents who rely on the services provided by The Gwent Regional Partnership Team is crucial to maintain health and wellbeing during what are very difficult times.”

The Alzheimer’s Society defines a Dementia Friend as somebody that learns about dementia, so they can help their community.

Cllr Carol Andrews, Deputy Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council and Dementia Friends Champion, said: "Last week was due to be Dementia Action Week, but this has been postponed until later this year, with a new date to be announced.

“It's important that services are able to continue and I'm pleased they are, albeit in a different format".

Cllr Carl Cuss, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Wellbeing, added: “It is important that charities can adapt during this difficult time, to continue delivering their important work. Caerphilly County Borough Council would like to remind everyone that they can take steps to become a Dementia Friend, with these online information sessions.”
