The Childcare Offer for Wales has been extended to include more areas and could save families of children aged between three and four across Caerphilly county borough thousands of pounds in childcare costs.

The new Welsh Government Childcare Offer is available for parents working a minimum of 16 hours or more per week to help with the cost of wrap around care and additional hours during the foundation phase.

From the term following their 3rd birthday, children could be entitled to 20 hours of government funded childcare. This is in addition to the 10 hours already provided by the part-time Foundation Phase and up to 30 hours of childcare during the school holidays.

Parents could receive the funding until they are offered a full time education place, usually the September after their child’s fourth birthday potentially saving families in the region of up to £4,725 per year.

Eligible parents will:-

  • Have a child aged 3 / 4 who is able to access part time education
  • Live in the Caerphilly Basin (including: Aber Valley, Bedwas,Trethomas & Machen, Llanbradach, Morgan Jones, Penyrheol, St James and St Martins wards). The Lower Sirhowy Valley (including: Abercarn, Crosskeys, Risca and Ynysddu wards) or the Mid Valley’s East (including: Argoed, Blackwood, Cefn Fforest, Crumlin, Newbridge, Pengam, Penmaen and Pontllanfraith wards.)

  • work 16 hours per week or more

  • earn the equivalent of working 16 hours at national living wage or national minimum wage or more

  • are in receipt of specific caring benefits

Cllr. Philippa Marsden, Cabinet Member responsible for Education and Achievement commented, “The feedback we are getting is that this offer must be too good to be true. Working with Welsh Government we have tried to make the process for parents as simple as possible, if you work a minimum of 16 hours, have a 3 or 4 year old and live in the specified area you will be entitled to the funded childcare.

“Parents are free to choose their provider or use the existing one their child is registered with and still gain access to the funding. I would urge all parents who think they are eligible to visit the eligibility checker or contact the team.”
