Young people’s ‘vote is their voice’ as they elect new Youth Champion
Cllr. Mark Evans and Cllr. Donna Cushing
Young people from across Caerphilly county borough are busy casting their votes in order to elect their new Youth Champion, who will represent them over the next two years.
Eleven to 25 year olds from across the county borough have been heading to the polls in their schools and local youth clubs to vote for either Cllr Donna Cushing or Cllr Mark Evans to become their new Youth Champion.
The Youth Champion is an important role as it helps ensures that the voices of young people who live in Caerphilly county borough are listened to when important decisions which may affect their lives in the future are made.
Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement, Cllr Philippa Marsden said, “As well as playing a key role in ensuring the voices of our younger residents are heard, the election of a Youth Champion very important in that it gives young people a flavour for the democratic voting process. The election is held in a very similar manner to ‘usual’ elections, with young people casting their votes on ballot papers and placing their cast votes into ballot boxes.
“I wish both candidates the best of luck – I know both Donna and Mark would be extremely worthy candidates for the role of Youth Champion”.
The voting takes place until this Friday 17th November, with the counting of the ballot papers and the announcement of the new Youth Champion taking place on the evening of the same day, Friday 17th November.
The role of Youth Champion was previously held by Mike Prew, who represented the views of young people for a number of years until May this year.
