Choosing childcare

Choosing the right childcare is a big step for your family. The following steps will guide you through the things you need to consider when choosing childcare and the options that are available to you.

The Family Information Service (FIS) is a free impartial service for ALL parent and carers of children and young people. We work closely with childcare providers in your area to provide you with accurate and up to date information about what they offer. We provide information, assistance and advice to help you find and choose the registered or unregistered childcare that is best for you and your child.

Step one

The FIS is your ideal starting point providing you with information tailored to your individual needs. When searching, you will need to think about whether you need

  • full time or part time childcare, which days and hours
  • childcare all the year around, out of school hours only, or just occasionally
  • childcare to be near your home or near your work.

Step two

Contact as many childcare providers as possible before deciding which one is best for you and your child. The following questions may be helpful in considering what you are looking for in a childcare service:

  • Is it welcoming?
  • Is it a stimulating place for children?
  • What facilities does it have?
  • Is it caring?
  • What about the staff?

Step three

Once you have found a childcare service you are happy with, have a settling in period with a few short visits for your child and yourself. This will help you both feel more confident and at ease.

You can also download a copy of the Childcare Choices booklet which explains how you can choose childcare that is registered and inspected by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate for Wales (CSSIW).
