CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) : latest information, advice and support

Coronavirus - payment of council tax

Council tax helps pay for essential services that are delivered to all residents in the county borough.

With this in mind, we are asking you to pay your monthly council tax instalments as shown on your bill.  If you have not yet paid the amount(s) due on this year’s bill, please bring your payments up-to-date. You may also have a balance to pay from before 1 April 2021 which needs to be paid.

We are now following our usual recovery procedures.  We look forward to receiving your payment.  If you cannot pay the whole amount, please email or call us so that we can try and help you.

How to pay

If you normally make your payments in person at one of our cash offices, please note the cash offices are currently closed due to the Coronavirus situation. There are many other ways you can pay. These include direct debit, online payments, using a Post Office card and our telephone payment line which is 01443 863366.  Visit our Pay your council tax section for full details.

Free advice and other support available

We understand that some council tax payers may be facing financial difficulties as a result of the Coronavirus. Please contact us by emailing counciltax@caerphilly.gov.uk or you can call us on 01443 863002 if that’s easier.

Due to Coronavirus restrictions, please be aware that staff may be working from home; this means it may take longer for us to respond. If the lines are busy, we may have to call you back; it may not be the same day but please don’t worry, we will return your call. Thank you for your patience.  We may ask for details of your income and expenditure to help us agree an acceptable payment arrangement with you.

The following support is also available:

  • Free advice if you have financial problems. You can get free advice from several organisations including The Money Advice Service, Citizens Advice and StepChange.  More information can be found on our Problems paying your bill? webpage.

  • Make sure you have claimed all the benefits and support you are entitled to. For working age families this could be Universal Credit, Employee Support Allowance or Statutory Sick Pay from the DWP, more information can be found on our benefits and grants pages.

  • Council Tax Reduction. This is a means tested discount for people of all ages. It reduces the amount of council tax you pay. The size of the reduction you receive depends on your income and household size. More information and how to apply can be found on our council tax reduction pages.

  • You may be entitled to a discount or an exemption. For example, you can get 25% off your bill if only 1 adult aged 18 or over is resident in the property or if someone living at the property is disregarded (not taken into account) for council tax purposes. Visit our discounts and exemptions section for full details and how to apply.

  • Student exemptions and disregards will be continued where your course has been extended, please email a copy of your updated student certificate, issued by your place of education, to counciltax@caerphilly.gov.uk.
