Sirhowy Valley

Have you recently visited Sirhowy Valley Country Park? If so please give us your views by completing our survey.

Sirhowy Valley Country Park is a great base for walking or cycling.

Take a gentle stroll along the former railway track (it’s flat!) or ramble down through the Flatwoods Meadows Local Nature Reserve alongside the Sirhowy River.

You can visit the restored Penllwyn Tramroad Bridge complete with original stone sleepers, or explore the woodlands on foot or on two wheels.

You can cycle in safety along route 47 of the National Cycleway to Parc Penallta and beyond in the west or south to Newport. Ynys Hywel Farm, a traditional working hill farm, managed by the Countryside and Landscape Service, is open all year for school visits or you can follow the farm trail.

Close by is Graig Goch Woodland Local Nature Reserve, an ancient and beautiful mixed woodland. There’s a steep climb to reach it but the views are great!

Sirhowy Valley Countryside Collector Trail

These are a fantastic way to discover more about your local countryside.

There are waymarked trails and many unmarked tracks around Sirhowy Valley for you to enjoy. Dotted along these tracks and trails are ten, easy to find, numbered posts, each with the name of a creature or plant that is found in that part of the park. As you find the posts, just write the name of the creature or plant in your album next to the correct number. There’s a map included in the booklet to help you find your way.

Once you’ve collected at least FIVE names, send us a stamped addressed envelope (don’t send your album) with your completed card claim form and we’ll send you your free collector cards; the address is on the back of the book.

Remember, you’ll need to fill out the questionnaire to qualify for your cards.

Each time you come to the park you can collect more cards by exploring different parts of the park and finding more posts.

There are three parks to visit and three books to complete –collect all 30 cards and win a free gift!
