Proposed closure of Pontllanfraith Leisure Centre

Caerphilly County Borough Council is carrying out a public consultation about plans to close Pontllanfraith Leisure Centre.

Pontllanfraith Comprehensive School, which shared the same site as the Leisure Centre, closed earlier this year and a demolition programme is being developed to prepare the old school site for future use.

The council is now considering the future of the Leisure Centre, particularly as the building needs significant improvement work and newer alternative facilities are now available in the nearby locality.

A new school (Islwyn High School) opened in June 2017 to replace the former Pontllanfraith and Oakdale Comprehensive schools. The new facility in Oakdale boasts impressive facilities including a 4 court sports hall, 4 tennis courts, a dual use 3G football and rugby pitch and a multi-purpose dance studio. It is also the council’s aspiration to relocate the 3G football pitch at Pontllanfraith Leisure Centre to Blackwood Comprehensive School, subject to funding being made available.

It is important that users of Pontllanfraith Leisure Centre get the chance to have their say about the proposals before the council makes any final decision. A 6 week consultation period will take place from 2nd October 2017 to 24th November 2017 and users of the facility, as well as the wider community, will be asked for their feedback on the closure proposals.

Clubs, community groups and individual users will be consulted so that the council can establish the level of demand for leisure facilities and determine if alternative provision is available elsewhere in the community.

A survey has been developed which can be completed and submitted online via the link below.

Alternatively, a printed copy can be picked up from the reception at the leisure centre or by contacting 01443 864354 / sharme@caerphilly.gov.uk.
