Reduce food waste this Christmas
Posted on : 05 Dec 2022
A staggering seven million tonnes of food ends up in the bin each Christmas in the UK. This includes an incredible 5 million Christmas puddings, 2 million turkeys, and 74 million mince pies!
Unsurprisingly, this places ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ as the time of the year when food waste is at its peak.
Luckily, there are some simple steps that could take to not only prevent food waste this Christmas but could help you to save money too.
Make a plan – We are all guilty of going off-list when doing the food shop, and with a huge variety of Christmas goods on offer, the temptation can be strong than ever. But whilst a few extras here and there may not seem like much, these can often end up costing you more than you had budgeted and going to waste.Prevent adding in sneaky treats by making a clear plan of what you plan to eat over the festive period, not forgetting to accommodate desserts and snack.
Make a list – now that you know exactly what you plan on eating, you can create a shopping list of everything that is needed. This will prevent being forgotten, minimise last minute trips to the shop and make sure you’re buying only what you need.
Check the kitchen cupboards – With a list now in place it’s a good idea to check your kitchen cupboards. You never know, you may find some dry goods still left over from last year that are still in date.
Use your leftovers – Christmas day has come to a close and everyone is stuffed, but there is still plenty of food left? From bubble and squeak to sandwiches and curries, there are so many options to try with your leftovers before turning to the bin.
Make your freezer your best friend – organise your freezer in preparation for any leftovers that you want to save for another day. With meat and vegetables on standby, you could end up saving money on our January food shop!
Recycle your food waste – if after all these steps you still have food to spare, make sure you are recycling your food waste. Not only is this much better for the environment, you could also be in with a chance of winning £500 in our Mash for Cash campaign! Find out more
