Demolition begins at derelict former Risca care home
Demolition has now begun at the derelict former Ty Darran care home in Risca.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has earmarked the site for an innovative new later living scheme, which will replace several existing sheltered housing schemes in the locality programmed for closure.

The Council’s Leader, Cllr Sean Morgan, said “It’s fantastic to be here to see the first stages in developing what will become a flagship scheme for later living.

“We know from conversations with future residents that they’re keen to see this development progressing, so I’m sure this initial step will come as positive news.”

Cllr Shayne Cook, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, added “This development will be unlike anything the Council has delivered before.  As well as having high levels of energy efficiency, it will also benefit from state of the art flexible communal spaces and outdoor areas to improve the health and wellbeing of residents.

"The development is in a prime location offering easy access to a wide range of services and recreation for residents, within the local community or in the comfort of their own communal spaces.”

Construction expert Willmott Dixon has been appointed by the Council to develop the facility. Speaking of the project, Ian Jones, Director at Willmott Dixon said, “We are proud to once again be delivering a project in collaboration with Caerphilly County Borough Council.  The development will provide Later Living Apartments in a flagship model. We believe that every home we create will be a special place to live.”

Future residents are currently being consulted on plans for the new facility; an event will also be held for the local community and details publicised soon.
