Green Flag status awarded to numerous parks and green spaces in Caerphilly County Borough

Eight green spaces in Caerphilly County Borough have been awarded Green Flag status by Keep Wales Tidy.

The Green Flag Award scheme recognises well-maintained parks and green spaces across the UK and around the world as well as their excellent visitor facilities and high environmental standards.

Parc Penallta has received its first ever Green Flag award; it joins Morgan Jones Park, Ystrad Mynach Park, Cwmcarn Forest Drive, Ty Penallta, Brithdir Cemetery, Waunfawr Park Crosskeys and Parc Cwm Darren which all currently hold the Green Flag status.

265 parks and green spaces across the country have received the prestigious Green Flag Award and Green Flag Community Award – from country parks and formal gardens, to allotments, woodlands and churchyards.

The Green Flag Award programme is delivered in Wales by environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, with support from Welsh Government.

Welsh Government Minister for Climate Change, Julie James said, “Our local green spaces have a vital role to play in connecting us to nature. These awards go to prove that Wales’ parks and similar areas are doing a wonderful job in providing quality places to relax and enjoy.

“The standard required to achieve Green Flag status is very high so I want to congratulate all of the sites recognised for providing excellent, year-round facilities to local people and visitors alike.”

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy added, “With more visitors than ever enjoying our green spaces, I’d like to congratulate the hard work of staff and volunteers who have maintained excellent standards at these sites.”

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Green Spaces commented, “We have some fantastic parks and green spaces in our county and staff work incredibly hard to ensure that standards are maintained in these award winning spaces and all of our parks.

“I’m absolutely delighted to see Parc Penallta added to the Green Flag family this year and hope that the community continue to enjoy this hidden gem and all it has to offer.”
