Ysgol Gymraeg Penalltau recognised for their work with the Welsh Language
Posted on : 26 Jul 2022
Ysgol Gymraeg Penalltau in Hengoed, Caerphilly has been awarded a Siarter Iaith Gold Award for their work promoting the use of the Welsh Language.
The Siarter Iaith, is a project introduced by the Welsh Assembly to all schools in Wales, to promote the Welsh language, develop a Welsh ethos and encourage pupils to improve their Welsh language skills, with the aim to increase the social use of Welsh by children and young people.
There are three Siarter Iaith awards: bronze, silver and gold, with each having separate targets. Some of the targets for the gold award include:
Pupils are able to speak Welsh confidently in a range of situations outside of the classroom
Pupils have individual Welsh reading books and continue to have regular guided reading sessions
Most pupils have an understanding for the culture and language of Wales and are aware of the advantages of learning Welsh
Nearly all pupils have a positive attitude towards learning Welsh
Councillor Carol Andrews, Cabinet Member for Education & Communities said: “A big congratulations to Ysgol Gymraeg Penalltau for their Siarter Iaith Gold Award.
“We are a borough with strong Welsh roots and are committed to including the Welsh language into everything that we do”
