Greater Bargoed becomes Dementia Friendly Community this Dementia Action Week
Posted on : 27 May 2021
Our Caerphilly Cares Team have been working with a range of partner agencies coordinated by the Intergrated Wellbeing Network to support local businesses and residents to become a ‘Dementia Friendly Bargoed’.
This award came during Dementia Action Week, a national event led by the Alzheimer’s Society that sees the public coming together to take action to improve the lives of people affected by dementia.
For Greater Bargoed to be awarded this status they had to meet a number of criteria areas, one of which was to create a local action plan. This plan involves educating local people about dementia and raising awareness about those living with the disease, training a number of Dementia friends and Dementia champions to name but a few.
Also as part of the week the Caerphilly Cares team all underwent Dementia friends training as part of the Take Action Week. Caerphilly Cares is a team of established Caerphilly County Borough Council staff, who offer a new centralised coordination and response triage service for residents in need of support for issues such as food poverty, debt or rent arrears, isolation or loneliness.
Caerphilly County Borough Council are urging residents to take action so that people with dementia can stay connected to the things they love for longer.
Representatives from the Caerphilly Integrated Wellbeing Network said, “We are very pleased to be involved in taking forward this in Bargoed and also see it as a key part in supporting and strengthening wellbeing more widely in the area.”
Councillor Carol Andrews, Dementia Champion for Caerphilly County Borough Council commented, “Dementia is something that’s very personal to myself and my family; therefore it’s wonderful to see so many local residents not only eager to gain further understanding of dementia but to also be so enthusiastic in offering support to people in their community. I am extremely proud of Bargoed as a whole for becoming a dementia friendly community.”
