New trains launched at Caerphilly Train Station
Posted on : 21 Nov 2022
Transport for Wales (TfW) launched brand-new South Wales Metro trains at Caerphilly Train Station on Friday 18 November.
In attendance was Cllr Sean Morgan, Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Julian Simmons, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation and Christina Harrhy, Chief Executive of CCBC.
The Class 231 trains are part of a multimillion pound investment into local transport. They will enable the trains to run faster, allowing more frequent services over key routes and they will provide much needed increased capacity.
James Price, Transport for Wales CEO said, “The arrival of these brand-new trains is another major milestone for TfW and signifies another step forward on our transformational programme to deliver a transport network that the people of Wales can be proud of.
“We’re investing £800 million into new trains that will provide more capacity on our network, they will have more and improved seating, provide air conditioning, power sockets and passenger information screens with up-to-the- minute travel information. The customer is at the heart of our planning at TfW and these trains will have more space for bikes, people with limited mobility and pushchairs.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the first new units enter service for customers next year.”
Cllr Sean Morgan, Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council added, “It is finally great to see the launch of the brand-new South Wales Metro Trains, the first brand-new trains to enter service in South Wales for many decades. This important project will benefit passengers across the borough and further in the Cardiff Capital Region.
“I would like to thank Transport for Wales for their transformational approach to delivering a transport network fit for the 21
st
Century. I would also like to thank them for hosting the visit here at Caerphilly Train Station.”
