Modern Gelligaer

The sinking of Penallta Colliery in the early 20th century saw major industry arrive. At its busiest it employed 3,200 men and produced almost 1million tonnes of coal.

Penallta was one of the developments that resulted in Gelligaer expanding rapidly, especially during the 1960’s. Other changes including the building of the new road between Gelligaer and Penpedairheol, which took an elevated route and afforded new views across the area.

Whilst much as changed, the heart of Gelligaer is still there, with The Harp pub and the group of houses behind the church reminding us of the longevity of this community, that owes it’s long history to its strategic location and rich resources.
