Choose Risca

Situated in the beautiful Ebbw Valley in the south-east of the County Borough, Risca, is a popular town surrounded by steep forested hills, bordered by the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal on one side and the River Ebbw on the other.

The town benefits from its prime location, taking only 10 minutes to reach the M4 or 45 minutes to reach Cardiff Airport by car and following the re-opening of the Ebbw Valley railway line in 2008, commuters and visitors can access a regular service to Newport, Cardiff and beyond. Local bus routes offer transport to the neighbouring towns of Blackwood, Newbridge, and Abertillery and there are several car parking options available.

Visit our transport and parking section which includes bus, train and taxi information and details of car parks available in Risca.

Independent retail is at the heart of Risca’s high street with a good range of new and established businesses offering something to suit all tastes and budgets. From butchers to beauticians and restaurants to repairs, this friendly high street boasts a market town feeling, together with a range of supermarkets.

The high street overlooks the picturesque Tredegar Park, which provides a children’s play area and a purpose-built site that hosts local community events such as Risca Beach Party and the River Lantern Parade. What is more, the community benefits from an award-winning male voice choir, museum, prominent rugby club and a leisure centre complete with swimming pool and modern fitness suite. In recent years, the former Palace Cinema has undergone a complete redevelopment and has been reconfigured, preserving the beautiful historic façade of the original cinema so it now contains a library with Customer First facility.

Details of the Council’s events programme can be found on the Visit Caerphilly website.

Beyond the high street, Cwmcarn Forest attracts those with a taste for the outdoors. Activities such as mountain biking, hiking and paddle boarding can be enjoyed by the thrill seekers whilst breath taking views can be admired along the Cwmcarn forest drive at a more relaxed pace.

Free Wi-Fi has recently been rolled out across the town centre, with visitors able to connect via the ‘FreeCCBCWifi’ network.  Funding has also been secured for Risca as part of the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Placemaking programme, which will be allocated towards making improvements to public spaces within the town.
