Blackwood Miners Institute (2006)

Blackwood Miners Institute

The Blackwood Miners Institute was built in 1925 and was opened as a snooker hall, owned by the Coal Industry and the Social Welfare Organisation. It was later expanded to incorporate a reading room, library, stage and rehearsal rooms for local societies. In 1936 the Main Hall was added. Recreation was provided in the form of tea dances, snooker / billiards and reading as well as providing a venue for local miners' union meetings.

When the pits began to close in the 1970's and 1980's the Institute fell into disrepair and was sold to Caerphilly Borough Council in 1989. It is now a community arts and entertainment venue.
