Terry’s Patisserie: a local award-winning food manufacturer supported by UK Government and CCBC
Posted on : 31 Aug 2023
Terry’s Patisserie is an award-winning specialist food manufacturing business, providing hand-crafted patisserie products to hotels, restaurants, stadiums, and venues throughout the UK as well as the local community.
The company began when Terry Williams discovered her passion for high-end patisserie and started operating out of the family home in Blackwood, before moving to a bigger premises at Euro Business Park in Aberbargoed and establishing the company under the name Terry’s Patisserie Ltd in 2011.
The company now employs 14 people, including highly skilled chefs from all around the world, as well as recruiting local talent. Terry’s Patisserie has conducted lessons with Crosskeys College, enabling them to work with students and find potential apprentices. The company also works with Cambrian Training to upskill their recruits to the level required to succeed in their roles.
Around the UK, Terry’s Patisserie has worked with clients including RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Ascot Races, as well as numerous notable football clubs, hotels, and venues, representing some of Britain’s iconic hospitality events. The company also continues to provide products to local businesses within Caerphilly borough too, including The New Continental Café in Bargoed and Llancaiach Fawr Manor.
Terry’s Patisserie often receive enquiries as to whether they have a shop. About this, Rhys Williams, Director, and son of the eponymous Terry, said, “We don’t have a physical shop, as we don’t want to compete with local businesses, we want to work with them.” However, to satisfy demand, the company is developing a click-and-collect model, where customers will be able to order products to pick up from participating businesses.
“We are encouraging people to use their local businesses and perhaps even discover places they didn’t realise existed, all while building our brand and getting our name out there.”
In 2022, Terry’s Patisserie approached CCBC’s Business Enterprise Renewal Team for a grant to purchase new specialist patisserie equipment. The company received £25,000 (£22,000 capital and £3,000 revenue) from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). This grant was 50% match funded by Terry’s Patisserie and dedicated towards the company through Caerphilly County Borough Council’s intervention of the UKSPF. The equipment bought using this grant money has allowed the company to elevate business productivity, attain Safe and Local Supplier Approval (SALSA) accreditation and gain a NOUVEM software system.
Rhys Williams said “It was a very simple process, and it was great to be able to easily reach someone on the phone. And the fact that the team have been flexible to suit the business is brilliant.”
As for the future, Terry’s Patisserie aims to set up their click-and-collect service and solidify their wholesale business in London. There are also ambitions to set up a pastry academy in the local area for budding chefs.
Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Cabinet Member for Prosperity, Regeneration and Climate Change commented “It was great to visit Terry’s Patisserie for a look around the premises and to speak to the workforce. There was a friendly atmosphere, and it was good to hear the ambitions the company has following the financial support received.”
