Caerphilly we need your help – join the recycling movement
Youngster’s plea to Caerphilly residents to join the recycling movement as a result of Caerphilly’s Cabinet approval to support the Resource and Waste Strategy route map.

A route map that sets out plans to develop a Waste and Recycling Strategy was agreed by Cabinet. Kicking off the public campaign to increase participation we hear from Ysgol Cwm Gwyddon Pupils with an important message, “Caerphilly we need your help!”.

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Waste, Leisure and Green Spaces said, “This powerful message from Ysgol Cwm Gwyddon pupils is a reminder that the recycling movement is so important for our future generations and we are doing all we can to ensure that we are able to meet the ambitious targets set out by Welsh Government with a robust recycling service.”

The seven-year route map highlights a number of “pillar projects” which have been identified as immediate interventions, anticipated to increase recycling performance. These pillar projects include:

  • Household Recycling Centre provisions – This includes plans to improve site signage and layout, improve customer service and engagement, as well as the introduction of a pre-sort requirement.
  • Kerbside dry recycling – A widespread campaign will be launched informing residents how and why to recycle creating strong foundations for behaviour change.
  • Kerbside organic recycling – Work will continue to highlight the benefits of organic recycling through initiatives such as the Mash for Cash campaign and will also introduce a 12-month trial of free caddy liners.
  • Kerbside residual – The Council will continue to engage with residents regarding existing residual waste policies for example top hatting (bags stacked on top of the bin) and side waste.
  • Trade service – Existing services will be reviewed to ensure the residual trade waste service is competitive.

Leader of council, Cllr. Sean Morgan said, “Whilst some residents are playing their part we know that approximately 50% of Caerphilly’s green general waste bins contain recyclable materials, including 9,000 tonnes of food waste. That is a staggering amount and I am sure we can all work together with improved services, as set out in the route map, and greater resident participation, to achieve 70% recycling rates and beyond to do the right thing and protect our environment.”

As part of the campaign residents can expect to see materials delivered directly to homes outlining waste and recycling services within the county.

An updated draft strategy will be developed for consideration by a Joint Scrutiny committee and decision by Cabinet late Autumn 2023. If agreed, public consultation will commence at the beginning of 2024.
