Caerphilly resident turns their old mash into £500 cash!
Posted on : 22 Jun 2022
The third winner of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Mash for Cash campaign has been announced.
Karen Dear from Penyrheol has been announced as the third winner of Caerphilly County Borough’s Mash for Cash campaign.
The Mash for Cash campaign was launched in March 2022 in line with Food Waste Action Week with an aim to increase the number of residents currently recycling their food waste.
The campaign sees houses monitored with one food recycling participant chosen at random each month, with each winner receiving £500.
The Local Authority hopes that the campaign will increase in food waste recycling, leading to a decline in the amounts of refuse disposal, boosting the overall recycling rates as well as supporting the Councils commitment to reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases and thereby contributing to the national and global goals for decarbonisation.
Mrs Dear said: “We have been recycling our food waste for many years so to be told we had won a cash prize for doing so was a very pleasant surprise. The money will definitely come in handy at the moment with bills continuing to go up.”
Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Waste, Leisure & Green spaces Corporate added: “I would like to congratulate to Mrs Dear on her winnings and a say a big thank you to the CCBC Waste and Recycling team for their commitment to this initiative and to keeping our borough clean through their work every day.
“At Caerphilly County Borough Council we are committed to creating a cleaner, greener borough for all. Recycling and food waste recycling are a really simple way that everyone can help towards our goal to be net carbon neutral by 2030 and we are hopeful that this initiative will help to increase participation throughout the borough.”
The Mash for Cash winners will continue to be announced every month throughout 2022.
