Caerphilly Council pledges support to Ukraine
Caerphilly County Borough Council has pledged its commitment to support the people of Ukraine.

A Notice of Motion, proposed by the Council’s Leader Cllr Philippa Marsden, was agreed during a meeting of Full Council on 16 March.

The Motion sets out the Council’s commitment to:
  • Recognise the suffering and resolve of the people of Ukraine, and those with close links to Ukraine.
  • Condemns the unprovoked and unacceptable military attack against Ukraine by the Russian Federation and Belarus.
  • Offers support if needed, through existing Council services, to all those who have family members in Ukraine and affected areas.
  • Welcome the Welsh Government’s commitment to accept refugees from Ukraine, and resolves to accept and support refugees within the county borough.
  • Urge the UK Government to show compassion by waiving visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens seeking refuge from the military conflict.

Cllr Marsden said “The ongoing military attack against Ukraine by the Russian Federation and Belarus has caused shock and concern around the world.  It has undermined world peace and represents a fundamental attack on democratic ideals and values.

“This war, like all wars, will cause disproportionate harm, fear and suffering to civilians.  This Motion sets out Caerphilly’s clear commitment to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and to offer our support to those affected by the atrocities currently taking place.”
