Community centres

We have 35 community centres within the county borough. Each vary in size, age and type but all serve the same purpose…… to offer residents the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities and events within their locality.

Although virtually all the community centres are in the ownership of the local authority, they are leased to management committees who manage them on a day to day basis. Each management committee is a charity, and works on an entirely voluntary basis, elected by the residents of the area it serves. Elections take place each year at the annual general meeting when those who may be interested in becoming involved in the running of their local centre have the opportunity to become committee members.

The facilities at each community centre vary according to the size and design of the building but virtually all have a main hall and kitchen with basic catering equipment.

They are able to accommodate a huge variety of uses such as

  • nurseries
  • mother and toddler groups
  • exercise classes
  • youth clubs
  • concerts
  • sports
  • adult education classes
  • O.A.P. groups, luncheon clubs and old favourites like Bingo.

The list is almost limitless and the centres exist specifically to meet the needs of the community.
