The health and safety of pupils and teaching staff is paramount. Individual schools will make the final decision and will communicate with parents through the usual channels.

Gritting and snow clearing

During the winter season we try very hard to ensure that the roads and pavements throughout Caerphilly county borough are kept safe from ice and snow. As an authority we are responsible for 1150km (718miles) of roads and whilst we are endeavouring to treat the whole network, we have had to prioritise salting 485km (301 miles) of primary roads. Where resources permit we treat all 'A' and 'B' roads and some of the busier lower roads.

Visit our gritting and snow clearing section for everything you need to know about gritting, grit bins and how we keep our roads safe during winter.

Traffic information

Local radio and television bulletins will help to keep you informed of any traffic issues or road closures.

If conditions disrupt services, contact will be made with those people affected. Contact our Adult Services Duty Information team on 0808 1002500 for further advice.

Children's Social Services will provide normal services for as long as conditions allow, if conditions disrupt services please contact the Contact and Referral Team 0808 1001727 for further advice.

Social services provide an emergency service outside of normal office hours. The emergency team can be contacted on 0800 3284432. Their operating hours are Monday to Thursday 5pm to 8.30am and Friday to Monday morning 4.30pm to 8.30am. This service deals only with emergency situations that cannot wait until the next working day.

Meals on wheels

Caerphilly Meals on Wheels service will make every effort to deliver your meal. However, weather emergencies and accidents can sometimes prevent us from doing this. Meals on wheels are not delivered on days when extreme weather causes unsafe road conditions for our drivers.

In preparation for winter weather, meals on wheels clients are given the opportunity during December to purchase two frozen emergency meals. These meals can be kept for up to 3 months in the freezer and used when we are unable to deliver as normal. Please ask your meals on wheels driver for further information.

Out of hours cover

We offer an out of hours service to provide emergency assistance by calling 01443 875500. Operating hours are Monday to Thursday 5pm to 8.30am and Friday 4.30pm to 8.30am Monday morning. This service deals only with emergency situations that cannot wait until the next working day.

Adverse weather conditions see an increase in call volumes to this number, please be patient and we will answer your call as soon as possible. For any non-urgent requests please use our website search to request a service or report an issue.
