Cabinet approves proposals to create centre for vulnerable learners
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet has today (26 January) approved proposals, under its 21st Century Schools Band B, programme to progress plans to create a centre for vulnerable learners (Pupil Referral Unit), which will form part of the Education Other Than At School (EOTAS) portfolio provision on the site of the former Pontllanfraith Comprehensive School.
 
Cabinet members considered the results of a community engagement exercise, as part of their decision, where 80% of respondents were in support of the proposals.  A planning application and full business case will now be submitted to Welsh Government.
 
If planning is granted and Welsh Government approve the council’s business case, the facility will support the development of existing provision in the county borough and will be equipped with high quality learning opportunities, indoor and outdoor sporting provision, as well as access to first class support.  Community use of the facilities would also be available outside school hours.
 
Cllr Ross Whiting, the council’s Cabinet Member for Learning and Leisure, said “This proposed facility would enhance the current services provided and become a centre of excellence to support vulnerable learners from across the county borough.  The centre would not only provide a high-quality setting and bespoke support for learners, but also offer opportunities for the wider community to benefit from its information technology and sporting facilities outside school hours.”
