Shaping the future of day services in CCBC

Caerphilly county borough council has recently undertaken a consultation exercise with the aim of shaping the future of day services across the area.

The consultation brought the matter into sharp focus and resulted in significant media coverage about the future of this key service.

Cllr Shayne Cook, CCBC Cabinet Member for Social Care said, “We appreciate the strength of feeling in the community about this much-valued service, so it is vitally important that we listen to the views of our residents. On evaluating initial feedback it’s clear that the council needs to carry out further work and ensure everyone has the chance to have their say to help us deliver a modern, fit for purpose day care service that meets the needs of the service user.

“Therefore we are going to revaluate our proposals and carry out a further consultation which will involve a wider engagement including services users and their advocates. This will pose a challenge due to logistics, resources and the possible impact of Covid-19, so the original timeframes for completing this review are likely to be extended accordingly.”

In the meantime the council will continue to provide its current provision of sessional support within the community and in bases. We will also be aiming to open additional capacity very shortly, which is likely to involve the phased reopening of another two Day Centres.

“We know that some people require more support and we will look to provide this as soon as capacity permits”, said Cllr Cook. “However, it is important to stress that coronavirus remains a real threat, so unfortunately we are not able to reopen Day Centres in the same way as we did before the pandemic due to Welsh Government regulations, risk assessments and being able to safely operate the facilities while making sure we protect users and staff.

We will provide updated information and answers to frequently asked question on our website.”
