What is all the ‘buzz’ about at Ty’n y Wern Primary?
Posted on : 20 Apr 2023
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Parks & Countryside Operations department will be working with Ty’n y Wern Primary School pupils to create a ‘Bee Corridor’, with the project to start week commencing 17th April 2023.
This will involve the cultivation and wildflower seed sowing of a long verge between the school and Llanfabon Playing Fields. The bee and pollinator friendly plants will be a haven for biodiversity and add a welcome splash of colour to the pedestrian entrance of the school.
The team will also be sowing some wildflower seed suitable for hedgerows to add to the great works the pupils have already undertaken at the school garden.
Sophie Goodliffe, Head Teacher said: “The bee corridor really is the icing on the cake which comes at the end of yet another successful topic. During the Spring term the school studied local myths and legends with a focus on Bran the giant.
“It is reported that Bran is buried beneath the mound at Twmbarlwm and his tomb protected by swarms of bees. This sparked many great activities including the composing of songs, creation of comic strips, climbing Twmbarlwm itself and a magnificent giants head being built in our school garden.”
Caroline ApHywel, Eco schools and Humanities lead at the school added: “We are a school that truly cares about the environment. As part of our work learning about bees our Heddlu Bach crew created seed bombs and leaflets which were posted to members of the community for them to plant in their own gardens. We are very grateful to the local authority for supporting this project.”
Cllr Carol Andrews, Cabinet Member for Education commented, “I am delighted to hear of Ty’n y Wern Primary’s enthusiasm to give pollinators a new food source and the school children a chance to experience nature on their doorstep.”
