Caerphilly Empty Homes Team wins at prestigious Welsh Housing Awards
Posted on : 07 Dec 2023
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Empty Homes Team has won ‘Team of the Year’ at the prestigious Welsh Housing Awards.
The annual awards, hosted by the Chartered Institute of Housing in Wales (CIH Cymru), celebrate the achievements and innovation made across the housing sector in Wales and the impact they have on the lives of so many.
Caerphilly Empty Homes Team won the award for its commitment, tenacity and creativity in tackling the issue of empty properties in the borough. During the past year, the team successfully brought 104 empty properties back into use; the highest annual figure to date for Caerphilly Council. This included successful completion of the Council’s first 2 enforced sales.
The Council’s Innovative Housing Pilot was also a finalist in the ‘Developing High Quality Homes’ award. The Pilot saw Caerphilly break new ground by becoming the first Council in Wales to develop modular steel-framed homes to Passivhaus standard. Using this innovative approach, it delivered 18 new one-bedroom homes in the Caerphilly area, built to the highest levels of energy efficiency.
Cllr Shayne Cook, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said “Both of these award shortlists demonstrate how we’re breaking new ground in Caerphilly to deliver bespoke housing solutions for local communities.
“The Welsh Housing Awards represent the cream of the crop when it comes to housing initiatives in Wales, so to win is a fantastic achievement and I’d like to congratulate everyone involved.”
