Caerphilly Council’s major investment to create healthier lives
Posted on : 24 Jan 2022
Over the past 4 years, Caerphilly Council has invested significantly into infrastructure to ensure Caerphilly’s residents can lead healthy lives in healthy spaces.
Thoughtful investment of up to £500m to date, has seen the creation of state of the art facilities to allow residents to lead more active and sustainable lives in areas across the county borough.
A fine example of this investment is the £300 thousand pounds spent to upgrade the health suite facilities in both Caerphilly and Newbridge Leisure Centres, the work has resulted in high quality, fit for purpose facilities that supports customer wellbeing.
Working in partnership with Welsh Government and Sport Wales Caerphilly also secured more than £300 thousand pounds to install a state-of-the-art Hockey Hub in Sue Noake Leisure Centre in Ystrad Mynach. This is in addition to the synthetic surface, six-lane, 300 metre floodlit running track in Oakdale, the first of its kind in the county borough.
More than £800 thousand pounds has been spent to transform the former Penallta Depot into a Reuse Shop. This flagship facility is the first of its kind in Caerphilly county and is a great example of both social and environmental sustainability. Items once destined for the Household Waste Recycling Centre’s can be repurposed and sold as reusable commodities as part of a social enterprise.”
“These investments are a snapshot of the extensive work that has been taking place across the county, said Cllr. Ross Whiting, Cabinet Member for Learning and Leisure, he added, “many of the projects further strengthens the commitment and vision set out in our Sport & Active Recreation Strategy - to enable more people to become more active more often.”
Cabinet Member with responsibility for Waste, Public Protection & Street Scene, Cllr. Nigel George, said, “We have a keen focus on our recycling agenda and significant investments have been made into enhancing services to supporting residents to reduce, reuse and recycle.”
Residents will be asked to play a vital role in helping to shape the proposals, by identifying the missing pieces of the jigsaw to ensure that the council is targeting its investment where it is needed most. Details of how the community can get involved will be announced in the near future.
